Tyler County Emergency Services District No. 1

A unit of local government that funds fire protection for Ivanhoe, Hillister and the surrounding areas of Tyler County.

Tyler County Emergency Services District No. 1 was created by the voters of the district to provide steady, dedicated funding for fire protection in this part of Tyler County. It is governed by a board of emergency services commissioners and is funded by an ad valorem property tax assessed on real and personal property inside the district boundaries.

The district does not run the fire department itself. It contracts with the Ivanhoe Volunteer Fire Department, which answers the calls. The district exists so that apparatus, protective equipment and training are paid for in a predictable way each year rather than through fundraising alone.

An emergency services district is a political subdivision created by the voters of a defined area to fund fire protection, emergency medical services, or both. Districts operate under Chapter 775 of the Texas Health and Safety Code, and more than three hundred of them are in service across Texas.

A district collects property taxes based on appraisals of real and personal property within its boundaries, then contracts with a service provider to deliver the actual emergency response. Because the tax rate and budget are set through an annual public process, residents can see what they pay and what it funds.

Ivanhoe Volunteer Fire Department is the service provider for Tyler County ESD No. 1. Its members are volunteers who live in and around the communities they protect, and the same apparatus that protects your family and property protects theirs.

Funding from the district pays for engines and brush trucks, protective gear, hose, and the radios firefighters carry onto every call. The level of service the department can provide reflects the support it receives.
